In south-central Russia around the city of Krasnoyarsk, dozens of fires were burning on May 18, 2004, and filling the skies with smoke. Across the top right part of the scene, a glimmering ribbon of white and blue traces the path of the still-thawing Angara River. This image was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite. Actively burning fires are marked in red. The image is available in other resolutions.
