In the Altay region of south-central Russia, scores of fires (red dots) were burning on May 14, 2004, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite captured this image. In the west (left), the fires are producing abundant smoke, which stretches north and east across the top of the scene.
