Numerous fires were burning across the plains of south-central Russia on May 12, 2006, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite passed overhead. This photo-like MODIS image also shows places where the sensor detected actively burning fires marked with red dots. Smoke blows northeastward from several of the fires. This image shows the area south of the Russian city of Novosibirsk.
