Wild fires and/or agricultural fires burned in south central Russia on October 10, 2009. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image the same day. Red outlines indicate hotspots where MODIS has detected unusually high surface temperatures associated with active fires. Not all of the fires emit discernible smoke, but the smokes plumes that are visible consistently blow toward the east.
The fires burn not far from Nazarovo (middle top) and the Yenisey (or Yenisei) River (lower right).
