In the Volga River Region of Russia, scores of fires are burning and filling the skies with smoke. According to news reports, fires are burning all across the country as a result of both a heat wave and arson. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image was captured on August 1, 2002. The Volga River can be seen in the lower right quadrant of the image.
