In western Russia, fires burning across the agricultural lands surrounding the Volga River were churning out a river of smoke that spread far to the north. This image of the region was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on May 3, 2006. Actively burning fires are marked with red dots. The left edge of the scene is thick with grayish smoke.
The high-resolution image provided above has a spatial resolution of 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response Team provides images of the area in a variety of resolutions and formats.
