A dust storm swept through Pakistan on May 17, 2006. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying onboard the Terra satellite took this picture the same day. In this image, the dust storm appears as a pale beige blur that obscures the land surface below. Originating in northern Pakistan, it moves southward, spreading out near the Indian border. Only a few small clouds dot the skies overhead. Dust storms often result from extremely hot, dry conditions, and according to news reports, Pakistan suffered a severe heat wave in May 2006.
