Agricultural Fires in Northern India

October 21, 2003

At the foothills of the Himalaya Mountains in northwest India, a broad swath of fertile terrain is created where the rivers and streams of the region spill out of the mountains. In this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Aqua satellite on October 21, 2003, numerous agricultural fires have been detected by the sensor and are marked with red dots. At image left is Pakistan and the broad, northern part of the Indus River Valley.

The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at MODIS’ maximum spatial resolution of 250 meters.
