Smoke from multiple large wildfires in Qu‚bec is blanketing the southern portion of the Canadian province and extending southward over the Great Lakes and eastern United States. This image was acquired by the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS), flying aboard the OrbView-2 satellite, on July 8, 2002.
The vast pall of smoke is affecting air quality in places well to the south, including New York, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. The image above shows the smoke beginning to blow eastward over the Atlantic Ocean.
