Fires and Smoke in Central Africa

This year’s fire season in central Africa may have been the most severe ever. This true-color image also shows the location of fires (red dots) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, and Zambia. The image was taken by the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA ’s Terra spacecraft on August 23, 2000, and was produced using the MODIS Active Fire Detection product.

NASA scientists studied these fires during the SAFARI 2000 field campaign.
