Numerous fires are burning in eastern Russia and on Sakhalin Island (left of center), and the smoke from these fires is drifting eastward out over the Sea of Okhotsk. In the high-resolution imagery, large burn scars stand out against the unburned vegetation. This image was acquired on May 18, 2002, by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite.
Please note that the high-resolution scene provided here is 500 meters per pixel. For a copy of the scene at the sensor's fullest resolution, visit the MODIS Rapid Response Image Gallery.
