Considerably smokier than two days before, this image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite shows numerous fires burning in south central Russia’s Krasnoyarsk region on May 24, 2002. This image is centered farther east than the image from May 22, 2002 (notice the position of the lake at the bottom of the image), and also shows the southern tip of Lake Baikal at lower right, and more fires along the Angara River, which drains northward from the lake.
Please note that the high-resolution scene provided here is 500 meters per pixel. For a copy of the scene at the sensor's fullest resolution, visit the MODIS Rapid Response Image Gallery.
