On May 13, 2002, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) detected numerous bushfires in northern Australia. It is still fairly early in the fire season there, and these fires may be agricultural or prescribed burns intended to lower the risk of more severe fires later in the dry season.
