On October 18, 2009, Lupit strengthened to a super typhoon. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image the same day. According to a bulletin from Unisys Weather, Lupit retained its super typhoon status through early in the day on October 19.
Lupit spans several hundred kilometers in this image, with an eye that spans roughly 40 kilometers. Especially high, thick clouds appear northeast of the storm’s eye.
