Dozens of fires were detected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on March 7, 2006, when it passed over the southern United States. The fires are marked in red in this image. Several of the fires are giving off small plumes of smoke. According to the fire activity report for March 7 from the Southern Area Coordination Center, most of the fires burning in the South were either prescribed burns (for managing natural resources) or other human-caused fires.
