Cloud-free skies over much of central Alaska on July 25, 2005, revealed dozens of fires burning in the state’s interior. As of July 26, 2005, the Alaska Fire Service estimated that more than 1,400,000 acres had burned across the state. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image was captured by the Aqua satellite on July 25, and active fire locations that MODIS detected are marked in red. A separate natural hazards event contains images of fires in this region earlier in the summer.
