Dust continued to blow across the Bodele Depression in central Africa north of Lake Chad on December 1, 2004. This image of the region was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite shows the lake as a green patch north of image center, and brightly colored dust to the northeast. At bottom left, the haze may be a mixture of dust and smoke from sores of fires burning in the area shown in the scene as well as location to the west. Active fires have been marked with red dots in this image.
