Fires in central South America have been intense in 2004, particularly along the border between Bolivia and Brazil. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from September 26 shows fires (red dots) and a river of smoke backed up against the Andes Mountains in western South America. Fires have been blanketing the region with smoke off and on for more than a month. At image left is Lake Titicaca.
