The MODIS instrement aboard NASA's Aqua satellite captured this true-color image of Typhoon Chaba on August 23, 2004 at 3:50 UTC, about 8 hours after it struck the Northern Mariana Islands. This powerful storm brought sustained winds of 287 km/hr (178 mph) and a storm surge of approximately 5.5 meters (18 feet) to the islands. The storm caused widespread damage including heavy flooding, uprooted trees and downed powerlines.
