Fires in Sumatra

May 19, 2004

On May 19, 2004, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image of several fires (orange dots) burning on the island of Sumatra (center). The fires are producing a thick cloud of smoke, which has been drifting northeast toward Malaysia and producing elevated air pollution levels in Singapore (on the southern tip of Malaysia, at right) since mid-May.
