On May 16, 2004, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image of the southern portion of the West Siberian Plain and dozens of fires (red dots) smoking across the region south of the Ob’ River, which cuts a tan path from the right edge across the top of the image. The Ob’ is joined near the top center of the image by the Irtysh River.
The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at additional resolutions.
