Across southeast Africa (left) and the island of Madagascar (right), hundreds, possibly thousands of fires, were burning on September 30, 2003. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image shows the active fires marked with red dots. In Africa, the fires are most visible in Mozambique to the east of Lake Nyasa, also called Lake Malawi.
