Smoke hangs over southern Africa on August 20, 2003, from the scores of active fires burning in the region and in places farther north. The active fire detections made by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite across Zimbabwe (top left), Mozambique (right), South Africa (lower left), and Lesotho (bottom center) have been marked in red in the image.
The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at MODIS? maximum spatial resolution of 250 meters.
