Dozens of fires were raging across Siberia on July 25, 2003, and were detected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite. Marked with red dots, the fires are creating a blanket of smoke, which in recent days has caused airports in the region to close due to lack of visibility.
The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at MODIS’ maximum spatial resolution of 250 meters.
