In New Mexico (right), the Dry Lake Complex Fire was billowing smoke southward over the forested mountains on July 8, 2003. To the southwest in Arizona, the Aspen Fire appeared subdued, with only one active fire location marked in red on the southern flank of Mt. Lemmon, northeast of Tucson. The large river running north-south at the right edge of the image is the Rio Grande.
